History / Summary

Associated with the service of Petty Officer John George James Turner. Turner was born in Sandwell, South Australia on 18 December 1894, the eldest son of Evelyn and John Denzil Etoile Turner. He became a Volunteer Naval Cadet when the Corps was founded in 1907 and became one of the first members of the Royal Australian Naval Brigade under the Universal Training Scheme when it commenced in 1911, his official number being 72. During the First World War, Turner served aboard HMAS Protector as a petty officer from 1915-1916, midshipman and sub lieutenant aboard HMAS Encounter from 1916-1918, and as a sub lieutenant aboard HMAS Gannet from 1918-1919, being promoted to midshipman in January 1916 and sub lieutenant in 1917. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 March 1923. Turner was employed in the shipping industry until he retired. He died on 24 July 1971.
