Outdoor portrait of S5251 Ordinary Seaman (OS) John (Jack) William Sievey RAN. OS Sievey enlisted on 3 March 1941 and joined the crew of HMAS Perth in August 1941, later being promoted to Able Seaman (AB). He was killed in action on 1 March 1942 when HMAS Perth was sunk by Japanese destroyers in the Sunda Strait. He was aged 21. AB Sievey's brother, S5252 OS Richard Thomas Sievey, was a law graduate of the University of Sydney. He enlisted in the RAN as an ordinary seaman with the hope of joining his brother. OS Richard Sievey was posted to HMAS Sydney and was killed in action when the Sydney was sunk in the Indian Ocean by the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran on 20 November 1941. The brothers were cousins to Captain Hector Macdonald Laws Waller, the captain of HMAS Perth, who was also killed when the Perth was sunk.
