Description

Studio portrait of Richard Thomas Sievey. Richard Sievey, a law graduate of the University of Sydney, was admitted to the bar in March 1941. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy as an ordinary seaman in the hope of joining his brother who was serving on HMAS Perth. Ordinary Seaman R T Sievey was posted to HMAS Sydney and was killed in action when HMAS Sydney was sunk after the action with the German raider Kormoran in the Indian Ocean on 20 November 1941. His brother, Able Seaman John W Sievey, was also killed in action when HMAS Perth was sunk on 1 March 1942. The brothers were cousins to Captain H Waller, the captain of HMAS Perth, who was also killed when HMAS Perth was sunk. The original portrait carries the following inscription: "To all I love at "Bramber" Chappie 14-3-41".
