Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX72032 (V24065) Corporal John Alexander Bartlett, New Guinea Air Warning Wireless Company, Second Australian Imperial Force, New Guinea, 1943.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one handwritten report titled “Details of Allied Landing near Hopoi on 4:8:’43” [misdated - correct date is 4 September 1943]. This report was written while Corporal Bartlett was operating a wireless spotting station at Lae, which was in enemy territory at the time. It includes a detailed description of the Allied landing at Lae. In his report, Corporal Bartlett writes about sighting the convoy of Allied ships, the shelling of the coast, a lack of opposition from enemy forces on the shore, the utilisation of a smoke screen, Allied troops being transported to the shore by numerous landing craft, opposition from enemy aircraft, the Allied bombing of Lae, and movements of enemy troops.
