Corporal John Alexander Bartlett enlisted to the Australian Military Forces on 17 August 1940. After several months of training, Corporal Bartlett embarked for service in New Guinea, arriving in April 1942. He then undertook signalling training in Port Moresby, and qualified as a signaller specialist. Corporal Bartlett was posted to the New Guinea Lines of Communication Signals (later, New Guinea Air Warning Wireless Company) in February 1943. While serving with this unit, Corporal Bartlett maintained and operated a wireless spotting station at Lae, which was in enemy territory at the time. For his meritorious service and devotion at Lae, Corporal Bartlett was awarded the Military Medal. He continued to serve with his unit in New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies. Corporal Bartlett was discharged on 30 January 1946.
