David Thompson was born in Sydney, NSW and enlisted for service in July 1915 at the age of 20 years. He was assigned to 4 Battalion with the service number 2708 and embarked for Gallipoli in August. While at Gallipoli, Private Thompson suffered from trench foot and frost bite and still suffered the effects of these while on the Western Front in France. After the Gallipoli campaign, Thompson was assigned to 13 Battalion for the British Expeditionary Force, though shortly after when in France he transferred to 45 Battalion. After this transfer his service number was ammended to 2708A, as another man in his unit had the same service number. In the northern summer at the Battle of Messines on 11 June 1917, Thompson was wounded by gun shot to the thigh. He was transported to hospital in England and the wound cause him to take no further action in the war. He was discharged from service and returned to Australia in February 1918. He passed away in 1962 and was survived by a son, Neville Gary Thompson - a National Serviceman - whose service medal the Memorial also holds.
