Studio portrait of VX4642 Private (Pte) Donald Alexander Hamilton, later of the 2/31 Battalion, of Mildura, Vic. Pte Hamilton enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 25 October 1939. The 2/31 Battalion was formed in the UK in June 1940 and personnel from many Australian battalions were incorporated into it. The 2/31 trained in Palestine and was then sent to the defence of the Libyan border in April 1941. In May it took took part in the invasion of Syria and Lebanon. The unit returned to Australia in March 1942 and in September it arrived in Port Moresby, New Guinea, to reinforce the units fighting on the Kokoda Track. Pte Hamilton died of illness in New Guinea on 15 November 1943. He was 24 years of age.
