History / Summary
Associated with the Second World War service of NX32179 Corporal Leslie John Cook, 2/33 Battalion. He was born in Perth on 11 June 1918 to Samuel and Alice Louisa Cook. He enlisted for service on 14 June 1940 in Marrickville, Sydney and was posted to the 6th Battalion before joining the 2/33rd Battalion on 3 February 1941.
Cook died from burns received during a crash on 7 September 1943. The battalion was waiting in trucks at Jackson's Airfield at Port Moresby, New Guinea to be flown to Nadzab, via Tsili Tsili when a fully-loaded Liberator bomber crashed among them. He was buried in the Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery.
