Studio portrait of 2178 Private (Pte) Hector Richard Hicks, 8th Battalion, of Carag Carag, Vic. A blacksmith prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wandilla on 17 June 1915. Arriving with his unit at Gallipoli on 6 August 1915, Pte Hicks was severely wounded shortly afterwards and evacuated to Floriana hospital at Malta. Pte Hicks died of his wounds on 20 August 1915, aged 18, and was buried at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
