Description
Studio portrait of B3089, Ordinary Seaman (OS) Jim Berry, HMAS Brisbane, of Palmwoods, Qld; formerly of Manchester, England. OS Berry enlisted on 18 March 1941 and trained at HMAS Brisbane until August 1941. After this he was at HMAS Cerberus, HMAS Penguin and then a hand onboard British depot ship HMS Anking. Following the fall of Singapore in February 1942, British craft were ordered to leave Jakarta. On 4 March 1942, HMS Anking and two other vessels were being escorted to Australia by the sloop HMAS Yarra II when the convoy was attacked by a Japanese heavy cruiser squadron off the south coast of Java. All three ships were sunk. OS Berry, aged 20 years, was presumed dead.
