Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Robert Stephen Miles, 8th Battalion of Albany, WA. A bank clerk prior to enlisting in April 1915 he embarked from Melbourne, with the 14th Reinforcements on board HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 January 1916. 2nd Lt Miles arrived in France on 4 April 1916. He was wounded in action at Pozieres on 26 July 1916 by a gun shot wound to the left elbow. He rejoined the 8th Battalion in early October 1916 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Lt) on 31 December 1916. On 22 April 1917 Lt Miles' unit took a German machine gun post at Lagnicourt, near Bapaume, France. During the strong counter attack Lt Miles was seriously wounded in both legs. He died some hours later at a nearby casualty clearing station. Lt Miles was posthumously awarded the Military Cross (MC) "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, he led his men with great dash and skill and was of the greatest assistance in consolidating the captured position. During the intense hostile bombardment which followed he set a splendid example to this men until severely wounded." Lt Miles was 24 years of age.
