Studio portrait of 4443A Private (Pte) Jack O'Brien, 48th Battalion, of Fremantle, WA. A driller prior to enlisting in February 1917, Pte O'Brien embarked from Melbourne with the 12th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 30 October 1917. After further training in England he arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 4 April 1918. On 9 August 1918 Pte O'Brien died of wounds received in action at Proyart, France. He was 18 years of age.
