Studio portrait of 2588 Private John William Cottam, 18th (later 3rd) Battalion of Parramatta, NSW. A fitter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November 1915. He was wounded in action on 15 April 1917 near Beaumetz, France and died of his wounds at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, France on 17 April 1917, aged 24. He is buried in the Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
