Studio portrait of 4940 Private James Sharp,1st (later 53rd) Battalion of Lidcombe, NSW. An engine driver prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 March 1916. He was killed in action during the battle of Messines, France on 19 June 1917, aged 43. He is buried in the Rue-Du-Bois Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
