Studio portrait of 2113 Private John Norman Burke, 9th Battalion of Sydney, NSW. A ship's steward prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Karoola (A63) on 12 June 1915. He was wounded in action at Flers, France on 30 December 1916 and died enroute to the Field Ambulance, aged 24. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
