Studio portrait of 5052 Private Claude Alton Middlemiss, 19th Battalion of Granville, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ajana (A31) on 5 July 1916. He was wounded in action by German bombardment near Flers, France, on 28 February 1917 and died of wounds on 9 March 1917, aged 26, in the No. 6 General Hospital, Rouen, France. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
