Studio portrait of 2654 Private William Heard, 45th Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A woodmachinist prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7 October 1916. He was killed in action on the flat near Messines Ridge, Belgium on 7 June 1917, aged 21. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
