Studio portrait of 3122 Acting Sergeant (later Private) John Bendict Hoban, 19th Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Suevic (A29) on 20 December 1915. He was killed in action by a sniper near Fleurs, France on 24 December 1916, aged 29. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
