Studio portrait of 415 Corporal (later Sergeant) Robert Smart, 26th Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A laborour prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 24 May 1915. At Flers, France on 14 November 1916, he was killed in action, aged 29, while attacking the Maze trenches. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
