Studio portrait of 4552 Private John Joseph Noakes, 2nd Battalion of Lidcombe, NSW. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916. He was killed in action at Hermies near Bullecourt, France, on 20 April 1917, aged 22. He has no known grave and he is remembered with honour on Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
