Studio portrait of 1346 Private (later Sergeant) Alfred Arthur Wood DCM, MM, 19th Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A carpenter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 June 1915. Sgt Wood was wounded in action on 11 November 1916 near Flers, France. He was repatriated to England and died of his wounds in the General Hospital, Stourbridge, England, aged 22. He is buried in the Stourbridge Cemetery, England. Sgt Wood had a short but highly meritorious Army career. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 26 September 1916 in recognition of his conspicuous and consistent gallantry at Gallipoli, Turkey and Pozieres, France. On 27 October 1916. he was awarded the Military Medal for his gallantry at Gallipoli, Turkey when "in charge of a post only 15 yards from enemy trenches, he kept enemy bombers from interfering with work on consolidation of a trench".
