Studio portrait of 5975 Private Ernest Buckland, 3rd Battalion of Canley Vale, NSW. A plumber prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 22 August 1916. A week after landing in France, he was wounded in action, by shrapnel, on 26 December 1916, near Flers, France. He died later that day at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Bernafay Wood, France, aged 44. He is buried in the Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban, France.
