Study for Hall of Memory, east window
Early study for Hall of Memory, East Window. Details of the figures in this study bear variations to those installed for the stained glass windows in the Hall of Memory. For instance, the figures' bodies in the study seem to taper into stone plinths, only a shadow of their feet decipherable. Whereas the final design depicts each of them clearly standing atop of a stone plinth. The figure for Coolness is depicted as a pilot in the study, while in the window is personified by an infantry officer. The infantryman for Control and lighthorseman for Audacity are the same, yet their uniforms are more accurately depicted in the window. Endurance is embodied by a wounded soldier in both the study and window. The Australian soldier in dress worn at ANZAC featured in the study for Decision is not an accurate representation of what was worn at Gallipoli, wearing a steel helmet and gas mask. The same fighting qualities are represented in each panel: Coolness; Control; Audacity; Endurance, and; Decision.
