In one of the last contacts involving Australian soldiers in Vietnam, 276640 Captain Terence John (Terry) Smith (right) of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) talks on a field radio to an American commander, while a US Army adviser, Staff Sergeant Duane McCormack (kneeling, left), has dropped his pack on the ground and raised his gun to cover the front. Partly obscured behind McCormack is a Cambodian signaller from 47 Training Battalion of the Forces Armées Nationale Khmer (FANK). Smith and McCormack were accompanying the battalion on a 4-day training exercise when two Viet Cong walked into its rear element. One of the enemy soldiers was killed and the other was wounded but escaped. Smith is wearing Australian pattern bush hat, US green jungle utility shirt, Australian JG trousers and Australian GP boots. His webbing is a mixture of US, Australian and British items, while his pack is early issue (1970s) Australian pattern, with US issue entrenching tool and machete. In the background (top left) is the turret of an M113 Mortar Carrier.
