Studio portrait of 464 Private (Pte) Frederick John Thompson, 9th Battalion, of Brisbane; originally of Fielding, New Zealand. A traveller prior to enlisting on 22 August 1914, Pte Thompson embarked from Brisbane with D Company on board HMAT Omrah (A5) on 24 September 1914. The 9th Battalion was part of the 3rd Brigade, who were the first ashore at the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Pte Thompson was killed in action that morning. He was 33 years of age.
