Studio portrait of 2272 Private (Pte) Bertram Ernest Chellew, 48th Battalion, of Jamestown, SA. A fireman prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide with the 4th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 12 August 1916. Pte Chellew was killed in action on 5 April 1918, aged 27. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.
