Studio portrait of 2705 Private (Pte) Charles William Johnston, 20th Battalion, of Dulwich Hill, NSW. A student prior to enlisting in July 1915, Pte Johnston embarked from Sydney with the 6th Reinforcements on board HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November 1915. In February, while training in Egypt, he was transferred to the 56th Battalion. Pte Johnston arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 29 June 1916. He was wounded in action at Fromelles, France, and died on 20 July 1916 while being carried to a dressing station. Pte Johnston was 24 years of age. His brother, 4453 Pte Francis Johnston, 53rd Battalion, was also killed in action, on 25 October 1916, on the Somme, France.
