Hodgson, Jack (Private, b.1916 - d.2007)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX19175 Private Jack Hodgson, 2/6 Australian Army Service Corps, Borneo, at sea, and Australia, 1945.
Collection consists of one 17 page letter from Private Hodgson to his wife, written between 24 August and 3 September 1945, while he was travelling from Borneo to Australia aboard the HMAS Kanimbla. In his letter, Hodgson writes about his embarkation from Balikpapan, Borneo, the lack of fresh water, mutual acquaintances on board, limited duties, the Japanese signing the Allied instrument of surrender on 2 September 1945, plans for the ship to look its best when arriving in Australia, seeing films, being in a thunderstorm and rough seas, being allowed to drink one bottle of beer, and expecting to march in parades upon their arrival. Above all, Hodgson writes that he is eager to be home and to see his wife again.
