Pre-enlistment Studio photograph of, left, 3437 Private (Pte) Albert Ernest Taylor, 2nd Pioneer Battalion, of Barwon Downs, Vic, and his brother Thomas Taylor. A dairy farmer prior to enlisting in March 1916, Pte Taylor embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Medic (A7) on 16 December 1916. He was killed in action on 22 September 1917 by a shell explosion at Westhoek Ridge, near Ypres, Belgium. This is one of two photographs (see also P08863.002) sent by an army chaplain to his wife, Mrs Ruby Taylor, with a letter dated 3 October 1917. The chaplain explained that the photographs : "...were found in the pay book of your husband and handed to me...it looks as if your dear good man was caught by a shell over the heart...". Pte Taylor was 30 years of age.
