Foster, Leslie James (Private, b.1890 - d.1916)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 1134 Private Leslie James Foster, 9th Battalion, 1915.
The collection consists of a letter Foster wrote to his mother in January 1915 while aboard the troopship Themistocles en route to Egypt. He recounts the journey of the troopship as it sailed from Melbourne to Albany, Colombo, Aden, into the Red Sea and along the Suez Canal. He also discusses his finances and the arrangements for his mother to draw on his pay as needed.
The final paragraph was written a couple of days later, after the Themistocles had arrived in Egypt, and briefly recounts Foster's initial impressions of Port Said and Alexandria.
