A farm hand and driver prior to enlisting in October 1914, George Murray was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 1 November 1914. Cpl Murray was appointed Acting Sergeant (A/Sgt) on 7 June 1916 and disembarked with his unit in France on 14 June 1916. He was a Temporary Sergeant (T/Sgt) from August to September 1916 when he reverted to Corporal following hospital treatment for a septic knee. Cpl Murray was with the 4th Division Signal Company from 10 January 1917 until 16 October 1917. He was then promoted to Temporary Sergeant and transferred back to the 14th Battalion. T/Sgt Murray was killed in action at Hebuterne, France, on 30 March 1918. He was 25 years of age. T/Sgt Murray's younger brother 5147 Pte William James Gunn Murray, 58th Battalion, was killed in action at Lagnicourt, France, on 27 March 1917, aged 20 years.
