Studio portrait of 5147 Private (Pte) William James Gunn Murray, 6th Battalion, of Warracknabeal, Vic. A mechanic and teacher prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Murray embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Melbourne on board HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 1 April 1916. After further training in in Egypt his unit arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 30 June 1916 . On 6 October 1916 Pte Murray was transferred to the 58th Battalion. Twice mentioned in despatches for bravery as a runner, Pte Murray was killed in action on 27 March 1917 at Lagnicourt, France. He was 20 years of age. Pte Murray's older brother 1379 Temporary Sergeant George Alexander Hugh Murray, 14th Battalion, was killed in action at Hebuterne, France, on 30 March 1918, aged 25 years.
