Studio portrait of 2979 Private (Pte) Gerald Tehan, 23rd Battalion, of Dixie, Vic. A dairyman prior to enlisting in May 1916, Pte Tehan embarked from Melbourne with the 2nd Pioneer Battlaion, 6th Reinforcements, on board HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 20 October 1916. He was transferred ot the 23rd Battalion in England on 12 July 1917 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 31 July 1917. Pte Tehan was killed in action at Menin Road, Ypres, Belgium, on 7 November 1917. He was 20 years of age. Three of Pte Tehan's eight brothers also enlisted: 2427 Corporal Jack Tehan, who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 254 Sergeant Thomas Tehan and 3265 Pte William Tehan. All returned to Australia in 1919.
