Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX48471 Private Sidney Russell Core, 2/18 Battalion, prisoner of war, 1941-1946.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection includes nine letters Core wrote to his mother between October 1941 and January 1942 from the army training camp in Dubbo and, later, after he had been posted to Malaya. He writes of his training, guard duties, of visiting Sydney, of making arrangements for his mother to receive an allotment from his pay, of the voyage to Malaya, and of the weather. He also alludes to censorship. Core was taken a prisoner of war by the Japanese following the fall of Singapore in February 1942. The collection contains correspondence from the Australian Military Forces (AMF) and the Australian Red Cross Society to Core's parents regarding his location and status, as well as five brief prisoner of war lettercards sent by Core to his mother from prisoner camps in Malaya and Borneo in 1943 and 1944. Core died from the effects of malaria on 30 June 1945. The collection includes correspondence from the AMF to Core's parents regarding his fate, as well as communications to the Core family from the Directorate of War Graves Services.
