Studio portrait of 2462 Private (Pte) Hugh Wallace McAlister, 55th Battalion, of Wagga Wagga, NSW. A farmer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements on board HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 30 September 1916. He arrived in England in November for training and onto France on 21 December. Pte McAlister died at Doigne near Ballecourt, France, on 2 April 1917. Eyewitness reports vary but it seems that McAlister was wounded in the shoulder or arm and subsequently killed by a shell. The location of his grave is not recorded, his identity discs were later returned to his family. His name is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in France which bears the names of those soldiers of the AIF who fell in France and Belgium during the Great War and whose graves locations are unknown.
