Bell, Harold George (Driver, b.1891 - d.1917)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 20118 Driver Harold George Bell, 11th Field Artillery Brigade, France and Belgium, 1917.
Wallet 1 of 1 consists of a letter written from Bell to his father John Calvert Bell and stepmoter Irene Agatha Wilson responding to family news, two unopened letters written to Bell by his family dated August and September 1917, a leave pass, an excerpt of a letter containing two accounts of Bell's death, a studio portrait of Bell in uniform with two of his sisters, a photographic postcard taken at Lark Hill Camp sent by Bell to his sister Kathleen, and a Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial application form for registration on the Menin Gate Memorial.
Bell was killed in action on 8 October 1917 by artillery fire during the Third Battle of Ypres. Despite being written months beforehand, the letters in the collection written to Bell never reached him. They were returned to the family who kept them unopened.
