Studio portrait of 2559A Pte Alfred Ernest Bale, 3rd (later 18th) Battalion, of Jindabyne, NSW, son of William. J. and Eleanor Jane Bale. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November 1915. He was killed in action on 3 November 1916 at Flers, France, aged 34. He was buried where he fell and post war the grave was not found. He is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
