Studio portrait of 208 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) George Watts, 15th Battalion, of Queensland; formerly of Llanelly, Wales. George Watts arrived in Australia at the age of 25 having served as a stoker in the British Navy. A miner prior to enlisting in September 1914, he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 22 December 1914. Watts was promoted to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) on 1 January 1915 and landed at Anzac Cove with his battalion on 25 April 1915. On 30 August 1915, L/Cpl Watts died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli. He was 31 years of age.
