Description
Studio portrait of 1138 Able Seaman Jack Jarman, HMAS AE1, of St Kilda, Vic, and a young woman, believed to be his sister. Jarman enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in July 1911 and became a crew member of the Royal Australian Navy's first submarine, AE1, in February 1914. On 14 September 1914, while patrolling the coast of New Britain, AE1 was lost. It is presumed that it struck a reef and sunk. Able Seaman Jarman was 21 years of age.
