Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (later Major) Alister Stuart Bowman, NSW Lancers. Born 22 September 1855 at 'Archerfield', Singleton, NSW, Bowman was a medical doctor (BA, Sydney University 1878) who set up practice at 'Pelham' in Singleton, NSW in 1884 and continued to work there for 50 years. He joined the 4th Infantry Volunteer Regiment in the same year and in 1894 formed the first half squadron of the New South Wales Lancers at Singleton. Appointed Government Medical Officer in 1898, he retired with the rank of Major in 1905 but continued to practice medicine. He is depicted in this portrait in the full dress uniform of the NSW Lancers, items of which are held in the Australian War Memorial's collections. (See RELAWM16105 to RELAWM16113).
