History / Summary

Patrol jacket worn by Lieutenant A S Bowman, one of the original officers at Singleton, NSW. Bowman was subsequently promoted to Captain and then Major. In January 1894 a half-squadron of lancers was formed at Singleton and together with the Maitland (Hunter River) half-squadron, formed No 3 Squadron. The New South Wales Lancers in 1894 were made up of 4 Squadrons in total. In 1903 No 3 Squadron became part of 4 Australian Light Horse Regiment (Hunter River lancers). Lancers had three types of uniform: the full dress tunic, patrol jacket and field service jacket.
