Studio portrait of 378 Private (Pte) Walter Vernon Chase, 10th Battalion. A labourer from Norwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) for Egypt. He was wounded in action early in the Gallipoli campaign and was evacuated to Malta for treatment and recuperation before rejoining to his battalion in late July 1915. The 10th Battalion was withdrawn to Egypt in late December 1915. In late February 1916 Pte Chase was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France by mid-June 1916. He was reported as wounded and missing in action at Mouquet Farm on 16 August 1916. Pte Chase was subsequently determined to have been killed in action on that date and is buried In the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boiselle, France. He was aged 22 years.
