Description

Prisoners of war (POWs) on board a German ship, probably the Storstad, three days after the last were taken from the Port Brisbane and Port Wellington and other steamers sunk in the Indian Ocean. The prisoners are being transferred to Bordeaux, France, prior to being taken to POW camps in Germany. The Port Wellington had been shelled and captured by the German auxiliary cruiser, the Pinguin on 30 November 1940. Eighty-one crew members and seven female passengers were picked up by the Pinguin before the Port Wellington was scuttled. They were then transferred to the Storstad. Identified is 36989 Able Seaman Frank Scott Broad who was a gunner on the Port Wellington (standing, centre, head directly behind head of older man in pale jacket seated in centre of second row).
