Pilot Officer James Leslie Burnham enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 23 August 1937. He joined 10 Squadron when it was formed in 1939, and served with this unit as a senior fitter and air gunner in the United Kingdom and the Middle East. In 1942, Pilot Officer Burnham received the Distinguished Flying Cross and a mention in despatches for his devotion to duty as a senior fitter on operations. Pilot Officer Burnham was discharged on 17 October 1945.
