Studio portrait of 2393 Private (Pte) Robert Edwin Hardy, 14th Battalion, of Brunswick, Vic. A bricklayer prior to enlistment in May 1915, he embarked from Melbourne aboard RMS Persia in August of the same year. Pte Hardy was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 11 April 1917, aged 34. He was the eldest of three brothers who all served in the same war. The youngest, Pte Harold F Hardy (P09701.003), was also killed in action in France the following year. The third brother, Pte Bruce F Hardy (P09701.004), enlisted in 1917, and returned home, wounded, later that same year.
