Studio portrait of 29075 Driver John Francis Foley, 102 Battery, 2 Field Artillery Brigade
Studio portrait of 29075 Gunner John Francis Foley. A 21 year old carpenter and joiner of Kogarah, NSW, he enlisted on 4 March 1916 at the Royal Show grounds, Sydney. Foley was already serving in the Citizen Military Forces in the 38th Battalion when he enlisted. Assigned to 116th Howitzer Battery in September, he embarked for overseas service from Melbourne aboard the transport Aeneas on 2 October 1916, arriving Plymouth on 19 November. After further training, he crossed to France on 8 January 1917 where he was transferred to the 1st Division Ammunition Column at Etaples and joined his unit on 19 February. Foley was mustered as a Driver on 4 August 1917; he took two weeks leave in early February 1918. Foley was transferred to the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, 102 Battery on 24 June 1918 and remained with this unit until the Armistice. After further leave in England in January 1919, he returned to Australia aboard the transport 'Derbyshire' and was discharged from service on 2 June 1919. Foley appears to be wearing his 2nd Field Artillery Brigade colour patches (rectangle, black over blue), helping to date the image to post 24 June 1918.
