Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one letter [including envelope] and one photograph relating to Captain Lester Cartwright Simpson-Gray. The letter was written by Captain Simpson-Gray’s wife, Mrs Mary Dorothy Simpson-Gray, to a captain in the United States of America [identity unknown], dated c September 1945. The letter includes details of Captain Simpson-Gray’s employment in the Malayan Civil Service and service with the Federated Malay States Volunteer Force. It also contains information regarding the last contact that Mrs Simpson-Gray had with her husband. The photograph is a black and white portrait of Captain Simpson-Gray.
Captain Lester Cartwright Simpson-Gray was an employee of the Malayan Civil Service, serving as the District Officer for Tampin Negri Sembilan. He was also part of the Malayan Royal Artillery Reserve of Officers and the Federated Malay States Volunteer Force. In late 1941, he trained with the Second Australian Imperial Force and was attached to 4 Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. On 15 February 1945, as Singapore fell to the Japanese, Captain Simpson-Gray was killed. He is commemorated at the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
