Description

Shipboard portrait of 7683 Driver (Dvr) Stanley Milton Sands, 1st Australian Pack Wireless Troop smoking a pipe (left) and an unknown Australian soldier (right). Dvr Sands, a shop assistant from Adelaide SA, enlisted on 19 August 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Saldanha (A12) on 5 February 1916 arriving at Basra, Mesopotamia in April 1916. He served with the unit, which was quickly absorbed into the 1st Wireless Signal Squadron, throughout its service in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and was eventually promoted to the rank of Company Sergeant Major (CSM). He was discharged in July 1917 and returned to Australia on 19 December 1918.
