Studio portrait of NX32742 Corporal (Cpl) Mark James Mellare Tome, of Ashford, NSW. Cpl Tome enlisted with his brother NX32743 Sergeant Frank Tome on 18 June 1940. Whilst serving with 2/19 Battalion Cpl Mark Tome was taken prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese. Cpl Tome was one of hundreds of Australian and British prisoners of war selected to move from camps in Thailand to Japan aboard the Rakuyo Maru. He died on 13 September 1944 after the Rakuyo Maru was sunk by a US submarine on 12 September 1944. His brother Frank was also taken POW of the Japanese whilst serving with 2/30 Battalion and was a member of A Force (Ramsay Force). He was also amongst those who died in the sinking of the Rakuyo Maru.
