Studio portrait of 1666 Private (Pte) William Herbert Toohill. A stockman from Toogoolawah, Qld, Pte Toohill embarked with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 12th Reinforcements, on 30 November 1915 aboard HMAT Suffolk (A23). On 11 March 1916 Pte Toohill was transferred to the 2nd Australian Divisional Ammunition Column and was appointed the rank of Gunner (Gnr). Following training at the Medium Trench Mortar School in June 1916, Gnr Toohill was transferred to the 2nd Division Trench Mortar Battery. On 31 July 1916 Gnr Toohill was admitted to hospital with gun shot wounds to his head and back. He never recovered from his injuries and died on 2 August 1916. He is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
